What inspection looks at on a headlight
A headlight check comes down to three points: both beams work and aim correctly, the lens passes light, and intensity meets the standard. An oxidized lens can fail the last two: the yellow or milky film scatters the beam, the measuring screen receives less intensity at the right height, and the remark lands — insufficient lighting or degraded lens.
What surprises owners is that a fail gives no warning: a headlight can look fine in a lit driveway and fail the measurement, because the eye compensates for light loss better than a device. Vehicles ten years and older are most affected — the age when the factory lens clear has been breached for several summers. A check before the appointment, headlights on against a wall at five metres, shows the halo and the beam cut-off.
What night costs you before the inspection
The inspection remark is only half the problem. On the road, an oxidized lens cuts useful beam reach by 30 to 40 %: where a clean headlight throws 60 metres, a milky one throws 40, and stopping distance on wet asphalt at 90 km/h already exceeds 70 metres. Scattered light also blinds oncoming drivers — the haze sends part of the beam upward instead of onto the road.
Seasons raise the stakes: in November, night lasts fifteen hours in Montreal and freezing rain reflects scattered light poorly; in January, a short-throwing headlight lands its light in the wrong place exactly where ice demands long vision. A restored headlight does not lengthen the road, it lengthens what you see — and that is the only one of the two you can change.
The restoration that passes the measurement
A shop restoration starts at the right end: progressive sanding until the whole oxidized layer is gone, polishing to recover clarity, then UV sealing to close the polycarbonate. The result is measurable — literally: after restoration, lenses pass nominal intensity again and the beam regains its clean cut-off at the right height. An hour of work per pair, and the inspection remark disappears for as long as the sealant holds.
Conversely, night-before-the-appointment tricks do not pass measurement: toothpaste polishes the surface without removing deep oxidation, the effect lasts a week; wood polish or generic products add a layer that brings its own yellow tone to the plastic. Worse, a headlight polished without sealing re-yellows within weeks — often just after the certificate renewal, at the worst point of winter.
Plan ahead rather than rush
Oxidation shows months before a fail: a yellow haze on top of the lenses, a beam losing its clean cut against a wall, headlights that seem to shine through a curtain on rainy nights. That is the time to book — restoration at that stage is faster, and the sealant banks its two to five years of protection before the next brine winter.
The cheapest reflex: include headlights in spring maintenance, with the detailing after the thaw. Lenses get washed with the body, the beam gets checked against the garage door, and the clear gets redone as soon as beading disappears. A car whose headlights were restored and sealed passes later inspections without thinking about them — and above all, it lights the road the driver actually drives between inspections.
